In the 271 spacious rooms and suites, decorator Nathalie Ryan (former designer of Dior boutiques) has kept the atmosphere of bucolic toile de jouy print fabric walls and photos of the beach and harbour. And put the emphasis on comfort in king-sized beds, casual armchairs and simply styled furniture. The bathrooms are particularly attractive with stripy wood washstands and grey mosaic. Many have baths with a clever button to choose between bath or shower jet; some have walk-in showers, suites have both.
Food & Drinks
The light-filled Belle Époque restaurant has kept its chandeliers but gone for less-formal style with natural wood tables, sleek velvet chairs and mosaic of a beauty wafting across the floor. The focus is on updated brasserie dishes, like sea bass or salmon ceviche, steak tartare or steamed cod and comfort desserts.
But it’s the breakfast that really stars here, as guests flock for the hot and cold buffet from scrambled eggs and bacon, Normandy cheeses to apple tart and flans. The clubby panelled all-day Normandy Bar specialises in whisky and calvados, with piano singers some evenings, tea and light meals in the afternoons. Staff can also book tables at other cafés and restaurants in the Barrière group, including several along Les Planches.
The Spa
Spa Diane Barrière, which specialises in Aerial Wellbeing for the Future™ – energising treatments combining high-tech ultraviolet light and sound therapy with ancient Chinese massages. You can come for a single session or personalised two-to-six-day cures. though the frothy white Oxygen cocktails in the spa bar clearly take a bit of getting used to. Adjoining it are the gym, sauna, hammam, and rooms for yoga and pilates classes, while the glass-roofed swimming pool is kept at a cosy 30°C.
